Head for the Hills

First off, I want to thank all of you Robyn-Readers who have come to visit and shared your experiences and good wishes by comment and email. I am so sorry I haven't had the chance to reply to everybody individually. But I've really enjoyed the feedback and have used many of your suggestions in helping Reacher become more comfortable here.

Now I know that many of you are probably here because Robyn's been out of commission for a few weeks and you are all starrrrrved for the kitty love and interested in the Crooked Acres adoptee who's become a City Kitty! That's how the web works, huh? However you came, welcome, and thanks! Just so you know, I have sucked at the updating for the past year, but with all the Reacher fun, I've been around a bit more.

So, Reacher! He continues to get more and more comfortable by the day. I didn't actually see him eat until the beginning of this week. He came here on the 9th, so that's a good stretch of time. I was measuring his food, so I knew how much he was eating when I wasn't around. But this was another little milestone, indicating that he's settling in.

Beau likes to spend time with Reacher, and sometimes when I leave for a few hours, I let Beau stay in Reacher's room. They are getting along very well. They lay around the room in different spots, but with their bellies exposed. They sniff each other out, and have even played a little together when I fire up the Crazy Red Dot (laser light). For the first time yesterday, I observed Beau grooming Reacher a little, licking his face and head. Awwww! Now that Reacher is venturing out more, though, there has been a little jealousy and limit-testing. Yesterday brought our first little cat dust-up! I see that as a natural part of the acclimation process.

So...MUCH much better. Reacher still runs for the window and slips behind the blind when he get spooked, which, frankly, can happen if I so much as move my big toe in his presence. Seriously. I checked with Robyn about what was "normal" for him, and Reacher was very much more laid back once he was settled in at Crooked Acres, just freaking out when strangers were about. So while we have come a long, LONG way, we still have a ways to go with the little Reacher Man settling in.

Until he's not so easly freaked, I'm going to continue his containment in his room. This is a huge house with lots of places to deeply hide. Oh I wanted to say, and I may have said before, I am thinking that city living as compared to Crooked Acres living is part of what is prolonging Reacher's settling in. We live on a very busy street, near the fire station, lots of foot traffic and strange voices out front and in the alley, lots of dog barking at times from ours and the neighbors, big trucks rumbling down the street at all hours. I think that the atmosphere is pretty cranked up compared to what Reacher was used to? Or maybe it's just that it's not Crooked Acres! Just a thought.

Work has gone completely nuts this past few weeks, and it's all cranked to a fever pitch which leads to a trial starting Monday, not far from Crooked Acres, actually! I am not sure what Robyn calls this town, Bigville? Mediumville? Heh! Anyway, I have 24 hours to get my shit completely together, and I head up to north Alabama around 1:00 Sunday to stay until my trial is done, probably just a day or two. I'm busy putting the final touches on trial prep, keeping witnesses wrangled for final prep on Sunday night, getting my court clothes together, etc. I see an all-nighter in my immediate future!

I'll try to get some more photos of Reacher when I'm in with him today and come back with those. I may have a couple that I haven't put here...if so, see below. If not, later!

I'm loving reading about Reacher. I have been reading you for quite a long time but I'm not one for leaving notes. I also read Robyn and am looking forward to her being able to post more often so I do appreciate you helping by posting more often.

Another of Robyn's readers popping over here to say hello. Awww, Reacher Creature. Very glad he's settling in, if gradually. Poor skittery purrball.

Go! Reacher! Go!
I love that last photo because it shows Reacher eating, which he loves to do, and it shows Reacher and Beau just hanging out as cats do -- I see great friendship in their future. I agree that some of Reacher's timidity is due to the change to a noisier neighborhood - when I moved from my old place on a quiet street to my current place on a busy street, my normally mellow fuzzball became a bit of a nervous wreck for several weeks. Mainly, he'd startle every time a car went by.

Good luck with your trial and keep on keeping on with the Creature!
