Dancing With the Stars week 8

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 12:20 AM

How nice, they are introducing Kelly as "singer Kelly Osbourne" rather than "reality star Kelly Osbourne", because that's kind of embarrassing.

They are talking about the top five and what everyone has to work on and again, everyone's criticism of Mya is entirely Dmitri's choreography, nothing about her at all, not one bit! Is this all a blind so that it won't be so obvious that she is the winner from week 1? That's my guess.

Mya and Dmitri do a quickstep that looked pretty classic to me, there might not be such horseshit from Len in the marks this time. And, after a fakeout where it sounded like he was going to shit all over her again, he said that there was nothing to criticize! Might we see a 10? And we did!

The hateful Aaron, who will be whining in the rehearsal footage about being in the bottom three again, I have no doubt. Ah, and they are trying to make him seem like not such a dick by him saying sadly how he's never won anything in his life and him being all caring about Karina being sick. Somebody's noticed that the audience hates him! They are doing the foxtrot, and for some reason Karina is dressed as Jeannie out of the bottle. Yay, low scores!

Now Joanna is doing the quickstep. Derek is dressed like a waiter on a cruise ship. That was pretty good, but Mya's was better, I don't think she'll be getting a 29. Her legs seemed very stiff. Not good judges remarks, but hopefully she'll get higher marks than Aaron did. Nope, exactly the same!

Okay, here's my girl Kelly, whom I think is likely to go this week, although I'd love it if she held up until the semis! She and Louis are doing a really smooth foxtrot. He's one of the best choreographers of the pros, no question. He's like Cheryl, he doesn't try to outdance his partner, he dances with her. The judges like it, though Carrie-Ann noticing what I did, that she doesn't spot her turns.

Donny is visibly thinner than he was in week 1. It's the Dancing With the Stars diet! He and Kym are doing the waltz. Donny is better than any of the rest of them at getting into the character of the dance. He sells it facially every time. That sounds like damning with faint praise, but it's actually big praise. Dancing is acting and if you make the audience believe the characters, the story and the relationship, that's half the battle.

Now they are all going to do a Latin dance, each in a different decade, because otherwise they'd never fill two hours with only five couples.

Mya and Dmitri and Dmitri's fake moustache are doing a 70's style samba. Let me tell you, for people whom I do not believe were actually born in the 1970s, that was one decently authentic disco-style dance. It was right out of American Bandstand, circa 1976. Wow, and there was the first perfect 30 of the season! I would like to congratulate the surgeon who removed the stick from Len's ass.

Aaron is doing a 90's samba, and is teaching Karina 90's moves. There were 90's moves? I wasn't paying much attention in the 90's, I guess. And they danced to that Spin Doctors song! I may not have paid attention to the moves, but that was the last time I liked any popular music.

Joanna and Derek are doing a paso from the future. Why does the future always mean emotionless robots? But you know what? Totally one of the best dances of the night. And the judges not only agree with me, they are all kvelling all over Derek's awesome choreography. Tom says, "Tonight we have learned that in the future we'll dance really well, but we're going to look ridiculous." I freaking love Tom.

Kelly's doing a jive in the Latin round? Since when is the jive a Latin dance? Samba, rhumba, paso double, tango, yes, jive? Really? She's teaching Louis go-go moves, actual authentic go-go moves! To a man who was born a lot closer to the 60's than she was! The thing is, when people think of the 70's or the 80's they think of one thing, for the 60's you can go in several different directions, but because Kelly is British they went in the more interesting direction, i.e. early 60's Mary Quant/Twiggy style. They're a couple of Mods up there! As someone who dated a Mod throwback in the 80's, it all looks very sweet and familiar. However, they are dancing to "River Deep, Mountain High", which doesn't match the look. And Len is gonna HATE the prop use! They throw in some pony and some swim and some twist steps. Though this is all my style, this Hullaballoo stuff, I don't think this is Kelly's best work. Though all of the judges disagree with me, which I'm glad about! Love the Kelly!

Donny as Adam Ant is doing an 80's paso. Kym is dressed Madonna style, which everyone remembers, of course, but no-one remembers the awesome Adam Ant look. O God, they are doing it to "You Turn Me Round"! Great song choice! Seems slowed down a little, though. Man, I loved the Latin Round of Various Eras, I think it was my favourite thing this whole season.

So the order of the evening is Mya (at only one point off of perfect), then Joanna, Kelly and Donny/Aaron tied. Seven points separate Mya and Joanna, but after Mya the other four are only two points apart.

Hello my fatshonista's! I come to you as a new member whose recently had a self-pity party about their weight only to realize that it's her own fault for dressing in crappy clothes and pretending like fat wouldn't look fat in certain things. Ha.

I'm mostly here to ask 2 questions.

1 - I grew up as a sport-playing tomboy so jeans and t-shirts have always been my thing. I have a few "nicer" pieces in my closet, but not much and I blame that on both the lack of funds & like I said before, the on and off again attempt to "hide" under clothes I felt comfortable in.
That said, I've come to ask you fashionable ladies, What are some necessities and fashion basics you need in your closet? Can't live without a cardigan? Love love leggings? Tell me some key pieces I should invest in! I own way to many graphic t-shirts and bland jeans and only have about 2 pairs of sneakers.

2 - Second question: A good wont totally bankrupt me leather jacket (or if not, a pea coat)? I'm into the "edgy/rocker" look and have wanted a good leather jacket for a while. Anyone know where I may be directed?

I'm 5'6 and a smidge, and weight 232 pounds. Last time I checked I was 45-45-?. I seem to carry my weight all over. I've got thick thighs & calves and a poofy stomach and thick arms. Some pictures under the cut for introductory/visual aid/jacket help. I'm not sure how to describe my size..pear, apple...I can't tell!

Love the post here, and can't wait to keep feeling better about myself and getting more into fashion! :)

Annd...here we go! )

First OOTD!

Please be gentle. Haha.

Shoes 'n' stuff behind the cut! )

Jacket - Venezia via Lane Bryant.
Dress - JMS via Walmart
Bag - really old. Let's be nice and call it vintage? ;)
Necklace - had it for a decade, so I don't know.
Earrings - Catherine's or Lane Bryant. Learning towards Catherine's.
Shoes - Predictions via Payless.

Although it's already November, it's still in the mid to high seventies 'round these parts, so tights would've been overkill. Heck, the jacket was nearly too warm. Also, although those shoes appear to be comfy, they're actually pretty awful.

And, am I the only one who rocks Walmart dresses? Haha.

Duo Boots review, and a cautionary tale

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 3:56 PM
So a few weeks ago, I posted asking about Duo Boots. I did end up ordering the Pavia style. They arrived amazingly fast -- I ordered on a Thursday and they arrived the following Monday morning. From the UK! to Philadelphia! the 21st century is awesome!

The boots, however, were... less than awesome. Read more... )

In search for a black fringe dress

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 1:24 PM
Hey lovelies,

I'm in search for a black fringe dress for a Charleston belly burlesque performance in December. I'm having very little luck in finding one that would fit me and doesn't cost me an arm and leg! I'm based in Melbourne so shipping cost is a bit problematic, too. My measurements are 42-35-44inches. Any help would be much appreciated!

Here's an OOTD to make the post a bit more interesting, haha.

In case that doesn't work, here is the direct link to the photo: http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs022.snc3/10936_503320826070_219900074_56752_3169376_n.jpg

Black shirt and leggings from Supre.
Dress from plus size shop in Taiwan.
Boots from ABC Mart in Japan.

Thanks :)

G'day again everyone. I wasn't intending to post again so soon, but this was another new piece of clothing that I bought and loved the other day, so I thought I should show it off.

For those of you who keep a track record of what everybody wears on here, you'll notice that the boots are the same as the ones I was wearing last time. I own other shoes, I swear, but the only other ones appropriate for winter are fairly unflattering sneakers.

Without further ado, here is the somewhat fuzzy photo (sorry about that. perhaps my friend fails at photo-taking, not that i'd ever tell her that):

OOTD and in search of...

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 12:30 PM
I'm looking for a pair of very high waisted trousers/pants/jeans in a size 16 US. Perferably with the square panel in the front and black or gray, but anything available would be nice to know about.

Dear Fatshionistas,

My name is Erin Claire, and I'm from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I should get to the point and say that my extended stay in this fashion rut has become too droll to withstand any longer. I don't have any photos, but my measurements are 48-37-51, and I was wondering if I could persuade those with similar digits to post photos of themselves in their flyest outfits, so that, ya know, I can blatantly bite your style garner inspiration from your stylish profundity. Also, since I would never wish to exclude anyone, would it be possible for you folks to tell me about an outfit, an item of clothing, or an accessory, or whathaveyou, that makes you feel your best? I'd be super grateful for any feedback.

I appreciate you all.

Love,
Erin Claire

P.S. Forgot to mention that I'm 5'5" and roughly 240 pounds.

Mind the schnauzer head in the foreground!

So....
Sweater: Banana Republic-lg
Belt and Skirt combo-Mac and Jac 16-thrifted
Legg'ns-ross plus one size-cheap

I am not 100% in love with the outfit...but when I went out, I wore it with knee high flat black boots.

Also...lambs...any ideas on hair 'do's for me?
I have never been hair savvy, and a sleek pony is about as exciting as it gets.
Hair gurus....any thoughts on fancy hair for me? Style, cut, length, colour?

Who knows!

Opinions needed

Hi all-

I think I found something that I like to wear for my bday. My problem is i'd rather wear the dress with flats because I'm going to be on my feet all night and my feet aren't the most heel friendly. Do you think I can pull it off with flats? What would you suggest as far as shoes and accessories? FYI the dress comes with a belt but the dress is a regular size 16 so the belt doesn't work so well.

does anyone have this dress from evans yet? i'm dyyyying for it but i've never ordered from them before so i have no idea what to expect. also if anyone could speak to the quality, of this dress or in general? i got a promotion at work and i'm going to reward myself handsomely, but this dress is gonna be about $130 after shipping which is a lot if it's going to suck.

also, trying to muster the energy to post some ootds, any day now...

LOVE Y'ALL

Where can I buy....

  • Nov. 8th, 2009 at 1:06 PM
I'm looking for a couple of things, but I'm not sure where to look. Maybe you all can help me? For reference, my measurements are: 45"/34J bust, 33" waist, 44" hips, 190lbs.
I want a pair of stockings like these (NSFW; picture of Dita Von Teese), except that cover all of my legs. I saw them, and now I can't live without them!
I also am looking for some thick stretchy belts (somewhat like this), but I really would love something with a large bow or something on the front. I want them in black, red and white. I haven't seen any for sale anywhere!

OOTD, DIY Pencil Skirt

  • Nov. 8th, 2009 at 5:02 PM

Hey Everyone,

So, here is another OOTD with some of the basics that I love.  But to top it off, I found this skirt for $3, it was originally ankle length and rather unflattering.  So, to make it a bit more stylish, I tailored it to sit higher on me (high-waisted) and cut about 11 inches off the bottom.  Then, with some of the extra fabric, I made a tiny fish tail for the back instead of putting in a slit.  Over all I think it was definitely worth the $3 I spent.

OOTD + Ferocious Ankle Boots

  • Nov. 8th, 2009 at 12:34 PM
Avenue has these amazing ankle boots. I got mine at a Brooklyn Avenue, like 2 weeks ago, although they have just appeared on the website.

Boots

I have the gray and black.  My only critique would be the silvertone hardware. I am going to replace it all, when I am less lazy.

This is me, wearing them.

i am nearly caught up with old-ish outfits that have been languishing on my camera for ages. here are the last of them! (one a little NSFW maybe)

outfits, outfats )
i also wanted to share this excerpt... i have been doing lots of reading about fat recently (here, in the blogosphere, and also in books and zines and things) and this particular essay had me nodding emphatically (or maybe emFATically) along. this whole book is pretty awesome, actually.

ranty ranty )

thanks to everyone for being so f(l)abulous and encouraging and inspiring.

Hi everyone!

Have been reading the community profile page (whilst supposed to be typing my dissertation...) and was interested to see that 'fat' politics were up for discussion here too.

BBC recently published the results of a survey (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8337512.stm) and I wondered what you all might think about it?

I can't say my size has ever held me back from gaining well paid employment...
